My interest in Cuba, which has never been that high on my bucket list, got sparked by the latest developments last year. The urge to visit and experience this country in it’s current form got bigger and bigger. Needless to say it didn’t last too long before the decision was made and plane tickets were bought.
Fast forward to May 2015, Havana. The initially planned car rental was a thing of the past, public transportation being the alternative. While not always the most practical the experience was rich.
For the next 3 weeks this beautiful island was called our home. Traveling from it’s capital Havana steadily to the east, passing Cienfuegos, El Nicho, Trinidad, Playa Ancon, Camaguey, and Sierra del Chorrillo and back all the way to the west for a stay in Vinãles and Pinar del Rio. A combination of smaller and larger cities, untouched nature and idyllic villages. So gorgeous!
Our Lonely Planet, by that time dirty and worn out, describes it all really well:
“Trapped in a time-warp, Cuba is like a prince in a poor man’s coat. Behind the sometimes shabby facades, gold dust lingers.”
Head over to Cuba the series for a peak into this amazing country.
